Calla lilies

Expression of feelings through flowers is an old practice that became finely tuned during the Victorian Era. It became a way for lovers to express true feelings while managing the art of discretion that the Victorian era so highly demanded. During this period, the stylish calla lily became a symbol for several related terms.

The main meanings of the calla lily are magnificence and beauty. They take their name from the Greek word for beauty and their meaning from the myth that the lily originated from the breast milk of the Greek goddess, Hera. Mythical tales also reveal that it was the beauty of the lily that caused it to be cursed by Venus, in a fit of jealousy, to always have to carry a heavy pistil.

According to “Hill's Manual of Social and Business Forms” that was published in Chicago in 1883, the calla lily meaning can be either modesty or delicacy depending on context.
It is, ironically, associated with both weddings and funerals. The calla lily is symbolic of marriage and purity because of its white color and its trumpet-like shape, similar to a woman's shape. It is also the symbol of rebirth and resurrection; therefore, it is widely used in funeral arrangements and planted in cemeteries.

yellow lilies; they can mean either gratitude and gaiety or falsehood.
